Having just dropped by Jessica’s Shower of Roses today I found that her children had modeled the most amazing Carnivorous Plants out of beeswax! So I decided to show off two of our tropical pitcher plants that reside in our Florida room.
I’ve found out that the larger of the two is a hybrid, Nepenthes albomarginata x maxima while the smaller of the two is completely unknown. At least to me! I purchased the small one from our tiny Commissary where the nice Filipino ladies bring them in.
Now, to illustrate just what sort of a girl I am, do you want to know the first thought that leapt to mind when I found the large pitcher plant? Anthropologie‘s Fall Collection. The model walked into a flower shop and hanging by the door was a HUGE Nepenthes albomarginata x maxima.

Oh my gosh, it is like walking back in to the HSU greenhouse! Lol! So, do you ever feed the plants or are they happily trapping bugs on their own? If you want a slightly gross but fascinating science session, cut one open lengthwise and you can see what it has been “eating”. Now I have to see what type we have on campus…
Hey Veronica! Ours are so big we can peek down inside to see what they’ve been eating! Lots of little bugs (hopefully no-see-ums!) and quite a few black wasps. I should try and get a photo of the inside today, I’ll switch my lens and give it a shot!
Sweet! Put your hand or something to give us some size perspective near one of them too. I know the ones on campus are HUGE, but I assumed that since you bought yours from the Exchange they would be smaller.
