I knew all those years of memory work would come in handy!
Being on Spring Break meant she and I had loads of time to actually cook together as we used to. So we did! Here, to whet your appetite, we present “Upside Down Pizza”.
First, make your favorite meat sauce. We chose hot Italian sausage, onions and mushrooms in red sauce. Pour into a pan. We chose a rectangular one for reasons that shall soon become apparent.
Top with loads of Mozzarella.
The original recipe calls for a layer of broccoli between the meat sauce and the cheese but Marianna was having none of it. “No Greens, Mom!” So we didn’t.
Top with pizza dough
Roll out the scary pop ’em pizza dough in a tube onto a bamboo cutting board, then flip the board over onto the pan of sauce and cheese.
Now do you see why our pizza is rectangular? Our dough is rectangular! If we were taking the time to make real homemade dough, it would definitely have been round but this is Spring Break! We’re taking it easy this week!
Yes, we have issues with electric stoves!
Press the dough up against the sides of the pan to create a seal. We pondered slashing the dough as for fruit pie to allow steam to escape but decided against it. Actually, I think we were hoping for a nice science experiment in our heart of hearts but the dough just behaved perfectly and didn’t balloon up a bit.
Bake to Golden Brown
Ours spent about 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
